Welcome to the Independent’s new sports blog. I still am waiting for someone on the technical side to change “rightfield” to “right field” and hopefully that will happen soon.
It still is a little quiet around here as the sports season at South Kitsap High School doesn’t begin for about a month — practices begin in late August — but there still is news to pass along.
South athletic director Ed Santos hired a new girls soccer coach Wednesday. Julie Cain, a former women’s assistant soccer coach at Seattle Pacific University, takes over for Michael Krug, who guided the Wolves to state last year. My story was published in Friday’s paper.
South Kitsap High School graduate Dave Villwock set a Seafair record with his 10th win in that hydroplane race Sunday. Nathan Joyce covered the event for The Kitsap Sun. Jim Riley also covered the race for The Seattle Times and Doug Drowley did the same in The News Tribune.
If you’re curious about Villwock’s background, I published this piece in the Independent two years ago.
Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman says Willie Bloomquist is likely to clear waivers if the Kansas City Royals try to trade him this month. That’s not exactly shocking as the South graduate is a utility player.
That’s it for now. I’ll be back with more information as news breaks.
