South Kitsap High School graduate Aaron Cunningham will make the fourth start of his professional career this year. As ESPN.com reported, Cunningham was traded Friday from Oakland along with Scott Hairston to San Diego for third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff.

Cunningham, 23, was drafted in the sixth round by the Chicago White Sox in 2005 out of Everett Community College. He was traded in 2007 to Arizona for infielder Danny Richar and then dealt later that year, along with five other players, to the A’s for all-star pitcher Dan Haren and reliever Connor Robertson.

Cunningham hit just .151 in 53 at-bats with Oakland last season, but said he told the Independent some of that was the result of a separated right shoulder he suffered during a home-plate collision in April with Jeff Clement.

Sometimes expressions in the crowd are enough to accurately convey what is occurring during a game. South Kitsap had one of those in its 43-34 Narrows League boys basketball loss last night against Gig Harbor.

During one of several stagnant offensive possessions, a South cheerleader used a pom-pom to cover her mouth and yawn. It was that kind of game.

As we chronicled in our game story, coach John Callaghan acknowledges that his team has “dug ourselves a hole.” Callaghan emphasized that it still is early in the season, but this team already has played 30 percent of its regular season.

With the exception of a 90-59 win Nov. 30 at Tyee — a team that suited up several junior-varsity players because of academic issues — the Wolves have struggled offensively throughout the year. It difficult to envision that changing.

There simply is not one go-to player on the offensive end. Even Callaghan’s mediocre squads the last two seasons had players who could create (Tionne Curry, Mike Longmire) and shoot (Nick Johnson) on the offensive side. South does not have a player of that caliber this season.

Because of that, it is difficult to see South’s situation improving. A few more shots might fall in the future — the Wolves converted just 23.5 percent of their field goals — but they also will face stiffer competition. Which means it might get worse for South before the situation improves.

If you have checked out any of the winter previews, one constant theme is the depth that all four South Kitsap teams feature.

Part of this is the result of winter sports featuring the fewest number of teams. During the spring, fastpitch, golf, tennis and track all are competing for females, while baseball, golf, soccer and track are vying for males.

During the winter, both the boys and girls have basketball and wrestling in addition to swimming for males. But perhaps just as important is the success these programs have experienced. It is pretty simple — more people want to be involved with successful programs. Boys basketball, swimming and wrestling all have experienced sustained runs of success.

But the girls basketball team is experiencing a resurgence after advancing to state last spring for the first time in nine years. The level of interest in the program not only brought depth to the junior varsity and C-team levels, but has added an infusion of talent to the roster. While the Wolves do not feature the height of last year’s team, no one would argue that this squad is the most athletic one the school has seen in several years.

The emergence of that program coupled with the others should result in another exciting season for South’s athletic programs.

As we noted in our story Friday regarding Joe Knowles Field, South Kitsap School District athletic director Ed Santos and Ron Ness, president of the South Kitsap Coaches Association, jointly hosted a meeting Monday night about facilities in the district.

I do not want to regurgitate the many elements that already were covered in the newspaper, but there were some interesting new revelations at the meeting. The first assignment for the approximately 20 people in attendance was to generate a list of athletic facilities improvements that could be made throughout the district. The attendees were split into two groups to cut the list of 30 items into 10 to 15 priorities. Santos said this is not a final list, and the public again is welcomed to attend the next meeting at 6 p.m. Dec. 7 in the South Kitsap High School library.

The lists were compiled without regard to financial burden. I could have requested a state-of-the-art press box at Joe Knowles Field and it would have made the list even though it would not have survived the cut. But football coach D.J. Sigurdson’s vision might encompass that and much more. Sigurdson eventually would like to see an off-campus facility similar to Puyallup’s Sparks Stadium built. The suggestion comes with the idea that SKSD eventually will have a second high school and a new facility would work better than Joe Knowles.

Even with the addition of an artificial surface at Joe Knowles, there are some inherent issues with the facility that were mentioned during the meeting. The footprint provides limited room to make renovations that would be necessary to make it a facility that could house state championships and other events. Specifically, there needs to be covered seating, which cannot be added on the side that faces the high school without blocking visibility to the stadium during the game. SKSD facilities and operations director Tom O’Brien said that means the other side of the facility would need to be renovated and would become the “home side” of the field.

And the new stadium was not regarded as a distant dream. One of the two groups — the other did not have a final list to present — considered it the No. 1 athletic facility need in the district. It will be interesting to see if this becomes part of a future bond issue presented to voters along with a second high school.

But as Kathleen Simpson from the Field Today, Fit Tomorrow Task Team, which was developed to add first-class turf and other amenities to communities in the Kitsap Peninsula during the next two years, said “we know that a levy or bond isn’t going to pass right now.”

Despite that, Ness said he is ready to move forward.

“We cannot sit here and afford to put off this issue any longer,” he said. “We’re going to have to take the bull by the horns ourselves.”

Through the taskforce, Simpson has worked with several agencies to create a long-term plan — she said it typically takes five years — to install turf on fields. The group is working on a few projects now, including one at Silverdale’s Gordon Field.

Simpson said the first step is starting a non-profit foundation. As far as fund raising mechanisms are concerned, Santos also seemed intrigued by the prospect of corporate sponsorship at the stadium. Sumner Stadium was renamed Sunset Chev Stadium a few years ago after the local car dealership, which Santos said writes that district a monthly check. He said they are using some of the proceeds to replace the turf at the facility.

“I don’t think we’re limiting ourselves,” he said.

Santos said adding turf would generate new revenue in other ways for the district. He said the Harbor Soccer Club, a select team, paid the Peninsula School District $118,000 last year to use three different turf fields in the district. In addition to that, Santos said maintenance at Joe Knowles would be significantly reduced with turf. He said the district spent $23,000 on the field last year. Some projections have that cost sinking to $5,000 with an artificial surface.

If you are driving home from a football game on football night, KJR-AM 950 has a nice program called “Varsity Football Live” that rounds up games from across the state. Dick Fain hosts the show and interviews people who watch different leagues to get their perspective.

I heard some interesting commentary after South Kitsap’s 10-6 win Friday night against Olympia after driving back from Ingersoll Stadium. There was a reference about the Wolves missing Foss on the schedule this year with the implication that they are fortunate not to play the Falcons. That’s because Foss played South tough last year before succumbing 29-26 when Sean Allison broke a 68-yard touchdown run with 56 seconds left in the game.

There are a few significant issues with making comparisons between different years when it comes to high schools. The main problem is rosters often change dramatically every year. Look no further than Olympia, which graduated 38 players from its 2008 team, including its quarterback and top offensive playmakers. South sits at the opposite end of the spectrum. The Wolves returned their starting quarterback (Gordy Anderson) in addition to some of their most dynamic talents (Isaiah Davis and Leon La Deaux).

It would be ridiculous to suggest that Olympia is the same team that went 10-1 last year. And it might be even worse to think that South is the same as the ‘08 version that finished 6-4 and struggled to put away teams such as Foss and Lincoln.

Another primary issue is teams with heavy numbers of returners do not always perform the same. Sometimes that occurs when there is a coaching change. Injuries also can be a significant factor.

The first scenario is not the case at Foss, but the Falcons benefited from playing one of the lightest schedules in the Narrows League to open the season. They beat two Tacoma schools, which generally are not regarded as strong as the league’s other teams, and a rebuilding Shelton team in the first three weeks. Then injuries hit and Foss was upset by Stadium last week.

Viewing this objectively, the Wolves have been mentally tough enough to win road games against Gig Harbor and Olympia — two teams they have struggled against in recent years — and avoided a letdown against Shelton. That body of work is most relevant when it comes to assessing them.

There was some news out of Ingersoll Stadium on Friday night in addition to South Kitsap’s 10-6 win against Olympia. South Kitsap athletic director Ed Santos told reporters during halftime that two Lacey schools, North Thurston and Timberline, Capital and Yelm would join the Narrows League for the 2010-11 school year. Santos said league members approved the additions this week. The Narrows will be a 15-team, multi-classification league next year.

Santos said the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association will announce cutoff numbers for Class 4A, 3A and others Dec. 1. He said league members will meet next week to examine the Narrows’ configuration. According to Santos arrangements could be different for each sport. For example, the Narrows is split into the Bay and Bridge Division for basketball this year, while all 11 teams play in one football league.

The announcement does not deviate much from our April story with a few exceptions. Santos said River Ridge likely will remain in the 2A classification and stick in the Evergreen Conference. He also made no promises that there would be a 3A and 4A division, but added that not having separate divisions to separate the classifications would be problematic for sports such as track that allocate a certain number of individual berths out of league into districts.

If the league stays at 15 — Santos did not discount that another school such as River Ridge could be added later — it will be interesting to see how the divisions are divided. Santos said that Central Kitsap and South Kitsap essentially are the only locks to be in the 4A classification. Central Kitsap, Foss, Mount Tahoma, Olympia, Shelton, South Kitsap and Stadium all met the 1,281 4A-enrollment threshold last year. Bellarmine Prep and Gig Harbor traditionally have opted up to play in 4A, but might not do that with a 3A option. And how would the Tacoma schools feel about being split into separate divisions?

South Kitsap was ranked in the state’s Associated Press football poll for the first time this season. The Wolves, who improved to 2-0 after last week’s win at Gig Harbor, are 10th in Class 4A. Skyline was first with 99 points, followed by Bothell (91), Gonzaga Prep (73), Auburn (66), Ferris (46), Southridge (43), Jackson (37), Eastlake (34), Olympia (32) and South (11).
Voting is done by a panel of sports writers across the state. The Independent does not have a vote, but we only cover one high school. Reporters at larger papers often follow dozens of teams.
There are certain limitations when it comes to these polls, though. A paper covering the Narrows League obviously doesn’t see what’s happening in Wesco, let alone schools east of the mountains. In other words, never place too much emphasis on these polls.
While the Wolves look like a team that should advance to the state tournament and perhaps even challenge for the Narrows League title, it still is early. After tonight’s game against a rebuilding Shelton squad, the Wolves play next week at Olympia. That game against the Bears, who haven’t lost any league opponent in the regular season since 2004, should give an indication of where South stands among the state’s best.
Winning that game would make the Wolves an instant favorite to capture the Narrows championship. But the challenge won’t end even after that contest. South then hosts Central Kitsap, which lost 31-10 on Thursday at Gig Harbor, but comparing results against similar opponents rarely is sound strategy.
The Cougars still have talent, particularly at wide receiver with Christian Wesley, and are breaking in several new players. It also is a rivalry game that CK has won the last two seasons.
If the Wolves remain undefeated after those games, expectations should be high. For now, it’s little more than paper.

This is a few days late after the holiday weekend, but here’s some perspective on South Kitsap’s 35-14 win Saturday in the season opener against Kennewick.
• Coaching: The Wolves had three turnovers in the first half — two on interceptions — but coach D.J. Sigurdson, who also serves as the offensive coordinator, did a nice job of mixing up the play calling. Sigurdson was pretty even in his distribution of running and passing plays until later when his team was protecting its lead and Kennewick couldn’t find a way to stop running back Robert Issa. South also responded well after falling behind 14-13 at halftime. The Wolves didn’t panic and scored 22 unanswered points in the second half. That’s good coaching.
Grade: A
• Offense: The only troubling sign was the inability to hang onto the football. South recovered two of its own fumbles on the opening touchdown drive, but lost another later and also threw a pair of interceptions. Without those mistakes, the Wolves essentially could’ve put the game away at halftime. Instead, they showed what they could do in the second half. The blocking was terrific, and Issa looked like the school’s next great running back with 242 yards on 27 carries. South also has plenty of talent at wide receiver with Mike Alonzo, Isaiah Davis and Leon La Deaux. All bring different talents that quarterback Gordy Anderson utilized. The whole package showed against Kennewick with 455 yards of total offense.
Grade: A-
Defense: The line, particularly Charlie Murray, seemed to get plenty of pressure on quarterback Travis Brown, who was intercepted once. Only one of the Lions’ two touchdowns could be considered against the defense as one of Anderson’s interceptions gave the Lions first-and-goal at the South 4-yard line and resulted in a touchdown. More than one-third (71) of Kennewick’s total offense came on its opening drive. The Lions had just 131 yards of total offense the rest of the game.
Grade: B+

Schools across the state will begin their seasons tonight, but South Kitsap will wait a little longer as it plays at noon Saturday in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic. We have a game preview, overview on Kennewick and a feature on quarterback Gordy Anderson.
Before any game, particularly openers, there are clichés thrown out such as “every game is a big game,” but I think it especially is true for both teams this year. Kennewick returns a large contingent of players that wants to prove its better than last year’s 2-8 mark. For South, coach D.J. Sigurdson repeatedly has said that his staff and players aren’t satisfied with the results in recent years. The Wolves have averaged 5.8 wins per season since 2003 with just one state appearance. A loss against Kennewick makes it difficult to envision South winning more than six games with opponents such as Gig Harbor, Olympia and Central Kitsap looming in the next month. South is just 1-5 combined against those teams the last two years.
Besides football, we also had previews on the Wolves’ girls soccer and girls swimming teams. Both programs begin their seasons next week.

Went to check out the former South Kitsap star and Seattle Mariners player as he returned to Safeco Field last night. If the return was a big deal to Willie Bloomquist, he kind of downplayed it. The media didn’t, though. There was a lineup of people waiting to talk with him about it, ranging from the Kansas City Star newspaper to the Fox Sports Northwest television crew.
The Independent’s story is posted here, while The Kansas City Star piece looks at his view from the other side.
It’s kind of interesting that Bloomquist was starting at shortstop until Yuniesky Betancourt was acquired from the Mariners in July. Royals general manager Dayton Moore drew national criticism for the trade, which sent minor-league pitchers Dan Cortes and Derrick Saito.
I’m not one that views Bloomquist as an everyday player — he has a .330 slugging percentage in 1,597 career at-bats — but Betancourt isn’t significantly better. And that doesn’t even get into the logic of trading two prospects, Cortes was viewed as Kansas City’s best pitching prospect by at least one source, when your team is in last place. Keeping Bloomquist as the team’s regular shortstop for the rest of the season would’ve made more sense.
Besides that, Kansas City seems like a much better fit for Bloomquist than Seattle, though. With Ichiro and Franklin Gutierrez in the outfield in addition to up-and-coming left fielder Michael Saunders, there wouldn’t be much playing time for him there. Bloomquist also was blocked by Adrian Beltre at third base and Jose Lopez at second base. That leaves shortstop, where he now would be sitting behind Jack Wilson.
The Royals are in a different situation and some have suggested they might look to part with some veteran players in the offseason. That could mean Bloomquist sees as much time in 2010 as he did this year.

The Independent moved from publishing on Wednesday and Saturday for several years to just printing on Friday in January. That means we adjusted our football preview coverage this year. We don’t have several issues to preview each position in the past, so there’s a comprehensive preview that’s available now online and will be in the upcoming issue.
Kitsap Sun sports editor Chuck Stark also checked in with his preview on the Wolves.
One interesting word in the headline is mediocrity, which hasn’t been used to describe the football program until recently. But I think it’s a fair characterization. After advancing to the state playoffs every year from 1980-2002, South has missed state five of the last six seasons. And the school’s one appearance in that span resulted in a 41-20 loss in 2007 against Graham-Kapowsin.
The Wolves have averaged 5.8 wins per season since 2003. That’s not enough and it will be interesting to see how the coaching staff adjusts this year. Will they break the traditional 75-25 run-pass preference they’ve shown in the past? After all, it seems the best talent on the roster is at wide receiver and quarterback Gordy Anderson is a returning starter.
I’ve seen before from Steve Gervais when he was at Skyline. Gervais’ system was much different than the one the Wolves use. A former quarterback at Oregon State, he loved to use three- and four-receiver sets.
But in 2005, Gervais recognized his best player, Brett Kaluza, was at running back. Kaluza saw the ball far more often than most running backs at Skyline — he rushed for 1,144 yards and 24 touchdowns — and the Spartans won the Class 4A state championship in 2005.
That doesn’t mean South should entirely move away from what it’s done well throughout the years — coach D.J. Sigurdson has won before with his system and likes running back Robert Issa — but with a possible Division-I recruit in Leon La Deaux and the dynamic Isaiah Davis at wide receiver, it’s worth exploring.

The sports season is up us, which means coverage of South Kitsap High School will dominate the paper for the next nine months. Our piece on local horse Atta Boy Roy will be one of the few that doesn’t relate to the high school in some sense for the foreseeable future.
Previews for fall sports will begin in this Friday’s paper. I can’t give a definitive answer on which sports will be covered first besides football and soccer.
Football will be in Friday’s paper and I’ll link it as soon as it’s finished. There’s plenty to cover with the opener at Qwest Field, which we’ll tackle the following week in greater depth.
Girls soccer will be one of the last previews simply because there’s a new coach. Julie Cain was hired in July and we ran this story on her. We’ll give Cain some time to assess her talent, which should result in a better preview piece.
We also will have boys tennis, cross country and volleyball stories in the next two weeks.

One of the many aspects I enjoy about the summer is the opportunity to interview a former South Kitsap football player at the semipro level. With the rare exception of someone such as former University of Puget Sound standout Mike Oliphant, these aren’t athletes with the ability to play in the NFL. They either are continuing with the hope of making an impression on a Canadian Football League or Arena team, or simply because they love the game.
Or, in the case of Victor Valle, some of both. Valle was stuck behind running back Ryan Cole at South before starting as a senior in 2002. Despite that, he stuck with the team and was rewarded with a breakout senior season that earned him a partial scholarship to play at Central Washington University. Valle now hopes that his patience will be rewarded again.
Chris Marin feels the same about the project to get the BMX trails at South Kitsap Community Park redone. There’s been plenty of work next to Casey’s Batting Range, but Marin says there still is a lot left to finish.
Central Kitsap Reporter sports editor Wes Remmer also checked in with a season review on the Kitsap Pumas soccer club. Jeff Graham from The Kitsap Sun reports that coach John Wedge was forced out by the team after the 2-1 playoff loss in Texas.

I just caught up with South Kitsap athletic director Ed Santos, who is taking a vacation before school begins. I wasn’t able to get quotes from Santos in Friday’s story about Cain’s hiring, but he said she was selected by the school’s hiring committee over two other candidates who were interviewed.
When Michael Krug was hired a year ago, Santos cited his experience with club soccer as an important factor. Because many soccer players play at the club level at a young age, he said it’s important to find coaches with experience outside high school.
And after Krug guided South’s girls program to the state playoffs and then led the school’s boys soccer team to its first state title, expect that criteria to remain in future soccer hires.
But school officials also were looking for someone who plans to be around for a while. Since Eric Bergeson resigned after the 2005 season, Scott Sodorff (2006-07) and Krug (2008) have guided the girls program. Santos wants the best candidate, but also hopes to avoid changing coaches every year or two.
“The one thing that came shining through is she’s real committed to the high-school program,” he said.
Cain coaches younger players for West Sound FC, which means she won’t have to apply for an exception to coach high school with the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association as Santos did for Krug last spring.
Santos also said Cain told him that the high-school program will be primary focus.
He now must filled the boys soccer position, but doesn’t have a specific timetable for making a hire.
“We’ll start the process in fall and see where it takes us,” he said.

Welcome to the Independent’s new sports blog. I still am waiting for someone on the technical side to change “rightfield” to “right field” and hopefully that will happen soon.
It still is a little quiet around here as the sports season at South Kitsap High School doesn’t begin for about a month — practices begin in late August — but there still is news to pass along.
South athletic director Ed Santos hired a new girls soccer coach Wednesday. Julie Cain, a former women’s assistant soccer coach at Seattle Pacific University, takes over for Michael Krug, who guided the Wolves to state last year. My story was published in Friday’s paper.
South Kitsap High School graduate Dave Villwock set a Seafair record with his 10th win in that hydroplane race Sunday. Nathan Joyce covered the event for The Kitsap Sun. Jim Riley also covered the race for The Seattle Times and Doug Drowley did the same in The News Tribune.
If you’re curious about Villwock’s background, I published this piece in the Independent two years ago.
Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman says Willie Bloomquist is likely to clear waivers if the Kansas City Royals try to trade him this month. That’s not exactly shocking as the South graduate is a utility player.
That’s it for now. I’ll be back with more information as news breaks.
