South Kitsap fastpitch faces winner-to-state, loser-out game
May 17th, 2013 at 4:55 pm by chrischancellorSPANAWAY — South Kitsap’s hopes to reach the Class 4A state tournament for the second consecutive year will come down to one game.
The Wolves (16-4) must defeat either Bethel or Rogers at 11 a.m. Saturday in the 4A West Central/Southwest Bi-District Tournament at Sprinker Recreation Center to advance to next week’s state tournament in Spokane.
After defeating Mount Rainier 9-4 on Friday morning, South was in position to earn a state berth just hours later against Todd Beamer. The Wolves led most of the game, but the contest was tied, 2-2, entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Maddy Colson hit a leadoff single against starter Ashley Chamberlin and MaKinzie Palmer followed with a sacrifice bunt. But both reached base safely when Chamberlin’s throw to first base could not be corralled by Hayley Romo, which enabled Colson to advance to third base.
Megan Jewett-Chen then hit a sharp grounder to shortstop Alissa Buss, whose throw to home plate appeared to beat Colson. But catcher Drew Camacho dropped the ball, and the Titans (20-6) earned their first state berth in program history.
“It was a little bit of a letdown because they just gave it away,” South coach Jessica Cabato said. “We’ve been in the opposite role (before).”
The Wolves faced a similar predicament last year when they defeated Union 2-1 to earn their first state berth since 2003. Cabato, who is in her first year at South, expects a similar outcome.
“They will be ready,” she said. “We just discussed leaving this field without any regrets.”
